Health 9 - Final Assignment Questions

1. How has your knowledge and understanding of drugs* changed since you have participated in this health course? *Drugs Unit: (Use and abuse of Tobacco, Alcohol, Marijuana, Meth, Heroin, Cocaine, Tranquilizers, LSD, mushrooms, Opium, Morphine, addiction, short-term and long-term effects of drugs, changes in relationships and lifestyles, drug laws)
Honestly, I feel like I am more prepared to face situations in the future. When I entered health class I already had a vague understanding of illicit drugs such as marijuana and cocaine from past lessons, but I feel this year we were able to take a more realistic and personal look into how drugs can truly affect our lives.

2.  How has your knowledge and understanding of STDs and contraception** changed since you have participated in this health course? **Reproductive Health Unit:   (Different types of STDs, how to do STD testing, different types of contraception, how to use them, how to put on a condom, etc.)
I honestly had never been taught about contraception before and I feel that I now have a more open view on what it is and how to sue it. I think that the lessons have taught me that sex is not just between two people, but a personal choice that has necessary and difficult choices (condoms, abstinence) that come into play that one must consider carefully always.

3. How has your knowledge and understanding of relationships***, changed since you have participated in this health course? ***Relationships Unit: (Healthy/unhealthy/abusive relationships, stress, depression, choices in sexual relationships, age of consent, coercion, keeping things cool, pressures for sex, being ready or not for a sexual relationship, recognizing abusive behavior, sexual assault, date rape drugs).
This is one topic that i was fairly sure I knew most about, but I was wrong. This year's health class really changed my perspectives on how teen relationships work and that their pace and rhythm is different for everyone. It taught me that respect is vital for every relationship and that pressuring someone to do something they don't want to, such as have sex, is harmful and counter-beneficiary.

4. Choose one core value and explain how it represents your learning in the HS health course.
One corevalue that really describes my learning in health class this year would be balanced. I feel that the course had a certain harmony in bringing into each subject interesting and different topics of discussion and balancing them perfectly throughout the year.

5.  What have you most enjoyed about this course?
I think I honestly enjoyed the open atmosphere the most. I felt like it was the only class I could openly talk abou these important personal choices in and this really helped me gain confidence not only talking about them, but also carrying them out in a safe, smart way.

Health 9 - Final Health Assignment Portfolio Blog Post

1. Find a news article/news video clip on the internet that is about a drug issue from your country of origin/a country you have lived/or your ethnic community. The news item could feature a famous person. Or, the news item could be about the police finding drugs, a drug raid, violence that has occurred because of the drug, etc. The news report or video, can be in any language! (English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, etc.)

 2. Link the news item to your blog. (Either link the youtube video, or share the link of the video/news article report on your blog entry)

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/05/20/us-colombia-drugs-idUSKBN0O52L320150520

 3. Below the link of the video/news article, answer these three questions about the news item:

1.What drug is being reported on?
The drug that is being reported on in this specific news article is the stimulant cocaine.

      2. Write a basic 3 sentence summary of what the drug report is about.
A small aircraft had crash landed in May off the coast of Colombia. The flight records state that the illegal cargo plane left Venezuelan airspace and was headed for Central America. The local authorities located the debris of the plane and were able to locate the illicit substance, cocaine, in what was left of the plane which was almost completely destroyed.

      3. How do you feel this drug has affected your community/society/country?
It honestly terrorizes me that this is a problem in my country, although it does not surprise me. In the complicated political state that Venezuela currently is in, there is little time devoted to the stop of illicit drug exportation. Also, Venezuela has the unfortunate luck of being surrounded by Andean nations which are large producers of cocaine and it's under-developed state makes it easy for drug lords to profit from it.

Eng 9 - R&J Current Event #4

Moving on in our Romeo and Juliet related current events, this week we were given the task of finding an article that does not have to do with impossible love. So, this current event article will focus more and justice and injustice and accidental deaths. The article talks about the tragic accident that occurred in Pakistan on April 24, 2015. In which 2 hostages, an Italian named Giovanni and an American named Warren, were killed during an anti-terrorist drone assault on a suspected Al Qaeda base. President Obama would later apologize for the events that took place, saying he took full responsibility for the accident that saw the end to two aid workers, whose lives were embodied by helping Pakistanis. As for the article’s connection to R&J it is not as simple as “teen love” or “long-term feuds” it is about justice and how people are killed accidentally at times. My main connection is the two aid victims are almost exactly like Mercutio and Tybalt, two figures one of which is from specific side/house (Tybalt and Warren) who were killed accidentally while a feud, in this case between the United States and Al Qaeda, was brutally taking place. The only question I could tie this to is “what is justice.” Now, in mu opinion in this case justice is defined as an action whose purpose was right and necessary and I do not think that the killing of these men nor the death Tybalt and Mercutio for that matter, were just in any way.

Eng 9 - R&J Current Event #3

Continuing on our Romeo and Juliet current event blog this time I decided to choose an article that would not only relate to the book, but that people could empathize with as well and that is closer to where we are. This article follows an occurrence that took place in Michigan in which star-crossed lovers Jayden (14) and Braxton (13) ran away from their parent’s homes in order to pursue their love after their parents’ had refused to allow the relationship to go any further. The couple took the Jayden’s parents’ Ford SUV and went completely off the grid leaving with little over $80. Their parents had expressed their concerns about the 16-month relationship saying that they only spent time and thought of each other and that this was “too intense” for teenagers this young. Now, this is not where the story ends, the couple was found over two weeks later in just outside of Chicago and were apprehended by the police and taken home. They were allowed to go to school again but must maintain separated and wear GPS tags until further notice. Obviously, this article has many different ties with Romeo and Juliet, the main of which is the fact that Jayden and Braxton are in fact “star-crossed lovers.” Further similarities in the stories range from their parents’ disapproval of the situation, the ages of the young teens, and of course their apprehension which ties in very closely to Romeo’s apprehension and banishment in the novel. To finalize, the only essential question I think this helps answer and possibly expand our knowledge is the “what is love?” question. And it is outlined beautifully here as the will to practically risk your life for another person and to have an affection so powerful that you would give up everything, even family, to pursue that love.

English 9 - R&J Current Event #2

For this weeks Romeo and Juliet related current event I chose a more “literally related” article in the sense that the title of R&J is in the title of the article. It follows the story, much like the actual novel, of two star crossed lovers names Arafat (25) and Huda (22) who met in a mobile phone shop and immediately fell in love. Now, for several reasons when Arafat went to Huda’s family to get their blessings they refused, the most obvious of which is that Huda already had an arranged marriages being scheduled and Arafat was far poorer that the man the family had planned Huda to get married with. After this, Huda in protest ran away from her home and attempted to cross the border into Yemen disguised as a Yemeni worker. This obviously got her arrested and Arafat as well for being involved in it. They remain in prison awaiting after having gotten asylum by the UN organization UNHCR. Now, as for it’s ties to Romeo and Juliet, it is quite obvious that their story of elopement is close to the story of Romeo and Juliet in the sense that their parents refused it and they were apprehended by the government (Romeo banned by Prince). It also has that arranged marriage aspect like in the book with Juliet and Paris and the same refusal to marry is seen here in the article with Huda and her suitor. Finally, the obvious question that this ties with is “What is Love?” Which is answered quite plainly here, the passion for someone that would drive one to lose everything for that person.

English 9 - R&J Current Event #1

For the first Romeo and Juliet current event article I chose a news story from renowned daily newspaper The Hindu. The story follows the late Bharat Singh, who was shot and killed last month due to an age-long gang feud. The most likely that Bharat was murdered was because he was from the family of the Pehalwan gang and actually had power so the Balraj gang saw it was an opportunity to annihilate the opposing families’ political standing. This occurred in New Delhi, India just a few weeks ago on March 30th, 2015. As for its ties to Romeo and Juliet, there is a clear connection between the gang feud seen in the article and the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. We even see a sort of Mercutio/Tybalt figure that are killed, in this case Mr. Bharat, almost accidentally purely because of the hatred between the two families. This ties in very much with the guiding question of “Can long-term feuds be buried?” Looking further into the article in the case of the Pehalwan vs. the Balraj apparently no since the feud started in the early 1990’s and is still going on 25 years after.

Social Studies 9 - Declaration of Rights Question Classwork

Which Would You Choose:  After studying the French National Assembly’s “Declaration of the Rights of Man”, you hopefully noticed that it reads sometimes like the Declaration of Independence and sometimes like the Constitution’s Bill of Rights.  Knowing that both of them were designed to promote Enlightenment ideals, which would you prefer to have if you were starting a new government?

Honestly, if I were starting a new government I would undoubtedly advocate for the immediate protection of the citizens natural, essential rights therefore vouching for the Bill of Rights rather than the Declaration of Independence. Assuming the new government is starting completely from scratch I think that a Bill of Rights is much more important than a Declaration for 3 main reasons. The first of which being that the people is the main priority of a government following the guidelines of genius enlightenment philosopher John Locke, who advocated for the protection of people's natural rights. The most important of which, that are stated first coincidentally, are in my opinion life , liberty, and property. The second reason is that, obviously, if there is no rebellion there is no need for a declaration. Finally, something fundamental in the creation of a government so as to maintain peace and prosperity, like in England with the EBoR and in France with the DoM, is the creation of a written body of laws. This will ensure that no laws are change and make people responsible when they break the law avoiding situations like "I didn't remember it was a law."

PLA 9 - Produção Textual: Rap 2015

Ninguém nasce com arrependimento

nascemos sem coisas que nos causam sofrimento
sem coisas que nos mancham
sem coisas que nos marcam

Enquanto a vida passa

Int. Math - Semester 2 Reflection

Math has always been a subject that I have taken pride in and it is always a class that I can say challenged me, but in a good way. In the sense that it challenges me to learn and strive for more. But, there are certainly ways that I learn better in math class. Honestly I myself am a pretty hand on learner and I lie thing  presented to me instead of thrown upon me and told to “figure it out.” So, I advocate very much Ms. Boyd’s use of worksheets and investigations that actually answer your questions on a certain topic. However, for studying this is not always completely effective I think that there are ways to improve this system, by creating a sort of study guide in order to aid students when studying for the test. A core value that I find myself to be exceeding quite well in this semester has to be being reflective. This is quite rare for me and is something I usually struggle with yet this semester I find myself reflecting on my study habits and moving my way towards a more responsible high school career. On of the things that I have, in fact, been having trouble with is probably being balanced. But, not in the way most would think. I am having trouble balancing my work this semester. I think this semester in specific was been a work-loaded part of the year and we are getting little time to ourselves which becomes an issue when it is necessary to study. So, I think this is the core value I really need to focus on, getting my school affairs together and then when I finish have free time. I always want to keep improving my study habits and core value skills and I am confident this year that I shall have a big improvement in the areas that need it.

Social Studies 9 - Declaration of Independence Analysis (March 16 Homework)

Why did the Constitution allow slavery to continue, if the Declaration of Independence claimed that “all men are created equal”?

The U.S. Constitution was a document that established America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens. One of the most basic and essential ideas that were written in the Declaration of Independence was the belief that “all men are greater equal.” Now, knowing the nature of the United States between 1789 and 1860 this was certainly not true. Slaves that were previously brought from Africa were constantly discriminated and treated as inferiors, unequals. Now, one can argue that does that mean that the constitution contradicts itself? Not necessarily. The Constitution’s main concern was to secure freedom and the basic rights of their citizens, one of these rights albeit change by Jefferson was the right to property. Sadly, this meant all property which at the time denoted African slaves as well. So The Declaration of Independence did in fact advocate that all men are created equal but only white, free men that owned land or the predominate population in the colonies. When the Founding Fathers drafted the Declaration it is safe that they were more concerned in founding a new free nation than protecting thee rights of slaves, so when the used this phrasethat “all men are greater equal” he was more focused on the equality of people like themselves.

Social Studies 9 - Montesquieu’s Governmental Ultimatum: True or False? (Homework Jan. 29)

Montesquieu’s Governmental Ultimatum: True or False?

Montesquieu, who was born in Paris in 1689 during a time previous to the glory of the Scientific Revolution, was quite fond of John Locke’s way of thinking in which people are naturally good and that we do keep our promises, but Montesquieu thought that the best form of government was democracy. In fact, Montesquieu harbored many of the ideas that would later be incorporated into the American constitution and Bill of Rights. Even so, he did have his doubts on if every society would improve by having a democracy, and I tend to agree with him. Even though I concur that democracy is the best and most fair government system in the sense that everything is balanced and no one has too much power, but I think that communist countries where dictators are present such as North Korea and my own Venezuelan socialist-dictatorship the idea of democracy may not compute with the citizens and officials. I think that countries that have a culture that is communist or socialist based success through democracy may not come as easy due to the fact that they previously relied on it. Furthermore, I also think that a society can adapt to democracy though, and unlike Montesquieu I do not think that climate or geography have anything to do with it. So, in conclusion I do agree with Montesquieu that democracy, elections and checks and balances are the best systems for a progressive government but I agree conclude also that democracy would be better suited in some countries than in other, for example it would be better suited in a western country with a history of democratic influence and not so well-suited in a country such as North Korea that has relied on a family-based dictatorship for many, many years.
